MegatronIf you don’t know who Megatron is, you must be living under a rock!  Megatron is the leader of the Decepticons, who in multiple variations of the Transformers universe, has always been the strongest and smartest of the Decepticons.  In the original G1 series he was quite ruthless and evil, however was always falling flat on his face as the Autobots always managed to prevent his plans from following through.  However, as the many different Transformers Universes were created, he became more manipulative and successful with his endevours, making it a harder job for the Autobots to keep up and eventually stop his plans.  In terms of characters, the official description describes him best.

“Peace through tyranny.”
Megatron combines brute strength, military cunning, ruthlessness and terror. Aches to return to Cybertron to conquest after destroying all Autobots on earth. Plans to possess all Earth resources. Incredibly powerful and intelligent. Fires nuclear- charged fusion cannon. Can link up interdimensionally to a black hole and draw antimatter from it for use as a weapon. No known weakness.

The origins of Megatron seem to be pretty mixed.  in the original g1 cartoon it was told that he was built by the Constructicons and was the first ‘flying robot’.  While in other Transformers Universes he was a gladiator who fought in an arena.   After seeking change he formed a group the Decepticons and sought to take over Cybertron and rule the planet himself.  Perhaps one of the most interesting or funny relationships Megatron has is with his second in command, Starscream.  While Starscream was always willing to overthrow Megatron to lead the Decepticons himself, he rarely succeeded, and at times he did, to be defeated quickly by Megatron only to lose command.
MegatronMegatron’s original transformation in the cartoon was a handheld pistol (Walter P38).  Over the years however character designers made him into a tank or jet, since the sale of replica hand guns was made illegal in many countries (as the transformed Megatron was classed as a replica Walter P38).  Since then he has undergone much change, but ultimately always returning to the grey and black look.
Megatron’s tale usually ends with him being destroyed.  But in G1 and a few other Japanese Transformers Universes, he is rebuilt by Unicron in a Decepticon called Galvatron, a physically stronger but more unstable leader, but that is a whole other tale!
